Consumer Profile Segments in the Spokane Metropolitan Area Cameron Hashagen Jacob Scott Brittney Wold Eastern Washington University The city of Spokane is located on the eastern side of Washington State about 20 miles from the Washington-Idaho border. It is one of the only major cities in the inland northwest, the closest being Boise, Idaho. The area surrounding the city would be considered rural farming land. In the 2010 United States Census it was determined that Spokane had a population of 208,916 residents. The population estimate for 2013 is 210,721 (US Census, 2010). As compared to the rest of the state, Spokane has a significantly lower median household income, $42,274 as compared to $59,374 which is the state’s median income. In addition to having a lower household income, this area also has a high percentage of people who live below the poverty line, 18.7 percent of Spokane residents (US Census, 2010). The majority of Spokane residents identify themselves as white at 89.2 percent, followed by those who identify as two or more races at 3.8 percent (Pitts, Tyga, 2010). In the Spokane area, 67.7 perc ent of the population are homeowners, and the other 32.3 percent are renters.
