The Historical Progression of African Americans Essay -- American Hist
Permanent struggle for civil rights by the African Americans accompanied the historical progression of the African American society (Booker T. and Fitzhugh W. 2002). The African Americans had struggled for many years to have the same opportunities as the white Americans. During this time, there was a civil war aimed at liberating the African Americans who had been made slaves by the principal white Americans. However, the civil war did not improve the lives of the African Americans in America. The struggle for equal liberties was a journey that began in the year 1865 and ended in the year of 1876. Today, America is a powerful nation with a difficult past that holds a bright future. People of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds can share the same rights, positions of power, education, and all other functions that were once only for the white people of America. Though African Americans suffered tough injustices in previous years, their commitment and determination enabled them overcome the adversities that they faced on a daily basis and win their battle. Many aspects of African American life such as politics, culture and social development allowed African Americans to gain power in the United States over time. They had displayed much of the same qualities as the white workers in America and would prove that their former life as a slave would not deter them from becoming economically independent and successful in America. Although this did not happen immediately, it shows that they were determined and ready to lead normal lives and take their rightful places in society and in th e economy. Several factors had contributed to the historical progression of African Americans. Many social, cultural, eco... ...Nazarene movements. The African Americans built many churches and schools that further expanded their religious faith. Several changes took place during the historical progression of the African Americans. During the historical progression that started in 1865, changes occurred in social, political, economic and religious aspects of the African Americas. These changes took place at different times and each had different impacts to the lives of the African Americans. At first, African Americans were facing political, economic and social oppression from the white Americans. After a long period of struggle and determination, changes appeared in different aspects that made the lives of African Americans better. Oppression ended and the economic position of the African Americans improved since they had gained high literacy levels and could access better paying jobs.

Macro Environmental Factors Essay
Lancaster (2011) defines the macro environment as ââ¬â¢those global elements over which the organization has no control over but which affect the organizationââ¬â¢s ability to serve its customers profitably.ââ¬â¢ There are six major macro environment forces: cultural, demographic, economic, natural, political, and technological. The cultural environment includes institutions and other forces that affect the basic values, behaviours, and preferences of the society-all of which have an effect on consumer marketing decisions. The demographic environment includes the study of human populations in terms of size, density, location, age, sex, race, occupation, and other statistical information. The economic environment consists of all factors-such as salary levels, credit trends, and pricing patterns-that affect consumer spending habits and purchasing power. The (ecological) natural environment involves all the natural resources, such as raw materials or energy sources, needed by or affected by marketers and marketing activities. The political environment includes all laws, government agencies, and lobbying groups that influence or restrict individuals or organizations in the society. The technological environment consists of those forces that affect the technology and which can create new products, new markets, and new marketing opportunities. This is a way a country is governed, and they are usually more than one political party in a country thus bring in threats and opportunities to the businesses operating in such an environment. There two possible out comes from political environment are stability and changes in the ruling government. When a country has a multi-party system the environment is most likely to be associated with political instability as parties are battling for power. Political unrest is destructive to any business activity. In most cases these unrests results in loss of assets without compensation. The decision by the ruling party in Zimbabwe in 2000 was the land reform program which in principle was to redress the imbalance of land ownership between the black majority and white minority. The effect was a sharp decline in agricultural output as the white commercial farmers were mostly replaced by either politician or high ranking government officials most of whom were not really passionate about farming or by peasant farmers who had neither the technical knowledge nor resource to undertake farming at commercial level. For example, Delta as a result of poor agricultural season sorghum beer volumes declined with 8 percent as the supply of raw materials have been affected and the black majority in the farms could not cope up w this change in the season(The Sunday Mail Business ,page B7, 19 may 2013). Political instability is a favourable environment for an organization to operate in because they will be able to strategically plan and set objectives and they will be SMART. In Zimbabwe since the GNU the economy has stabilizes that firms such as delta could set themselves goals to achieve within a specific time frame and Delta has been pouring cash into re-tooling, re-capitalization and strategically positioning its business. Changes in government, as governments are formed by political parties. Government exert pressure on business through enactment and enforcement of legislation and formulation and implementation of government policies. For example government that might come onto power may cause threa ts to delta in the sense that it may be The social cultural factors are those factors which are considered to be socially acceptable in a society. These include the attitudes of the society to foreign goods and services, the dominant religion in that area, population structure-older generation wealth and pressure groups etc. as a firm it has to be aware of the dominant region in the area it is operating. For instance in Zimbabwe there are more than 60% Christians therefore it has to sell more of soft drinks to beer thereby affecting their decisions on what quantity to produce and their pricing strategies. It is unwise for DELTA to market its products in a market it is not aware of whatââ¬â¢s being socially acceptable in that area, taking this scenario when DELTA tried to market its products like scud lion lager in the market of Mozambique. In Mozambique people prefer beer in small containers but with high alcoholic percentages, thus their products did not make t in the Mozambique cane market. Therefore a firm has to fir st consider the social cultural factors of the market it wants to operate in for there are the potential customers of tomorrow for their business. This is the application of scientific knowledge to convert resources of an economy into outputs. On the technological aspect will be looking at the entrance of better and effective +ways in terms of machinery and products etc. Technology is vital for competitive advantage, and is also a major driver of globalization. This involves the creation of new markets and opportunities were a firm can easily adopt a new innovative way of doing operation and this enables it to compete globally. The uses of better advanced technology have a greater impact on the processes and performance of a firm. Technology is vital for competitive advantage, and is a major driver of globalization. The Delta Beverages has moved into modern packaging like the light 300mml bottle which uses fewer materials in production. The bottle was 25% heavier than the new one. The new plant for the bottle reduces rejects and output was enhanced to 42000 per hour Letââ¬â¢s take for instance Delta it needs to switch from being labour intensive to capital intensive in order to produce more quality efficiently and effectively as new advanced machinery will be introduced in the market. It means that if there were twenty employees who were mixing the contents and filling containers of coke they are automatically going to be eliminated. Therefore their way of doing operations need to be reorganised .As a result of using modern communication Medias like video conferencing and Skype managers can now make decisions whilst on holiday and it also enables exchange of vital information among workers at different geographical location easily. Organisations are also affected by the ecological 3factors; these are environmental factors that affect the businesses. It involves factors that occur naturally like drought, tsunami, floods etc. These factors have a greater impact on the operations of a business. For example if Zimbabwe is being affected by drought this means that the agricultural sector will have little to produce and for Delta which rely on sorghum as raw materials to manufacture beer , it will have to export those resources from other countries .Therefore this will affect the decisions ,strategies ,processes and their performance . A worker who will be involved in production will absent themselves from working search of food to sustain their families. Floods have also a negative impact on the operations of businesses as they result in deaths, destruction of infrastructure or the premises of the organisations leading to closure of some business and deaths of personnel. And the legal factors can be classified as polices, laws, rules and regulations adopted by the Government ruling at that time. These factors may have a greater impact on the decisions and strategies to be adopted by a firm. The Government they may adopt pricing policies. For instance the Government may put a price ceiling say a king-size bottle of soft drinks should not go above $0,50c so as DELTA it has to abide to the laws of the Government for it to continue operate in the market of Zimbabwe. The pricing policies impose on the farm produce also had an impact on the performance of DELTA as a firm. Say sorghum is said that its price should not precede $2 per kilogram, these means that the farmers will not be willing to sell their produce to the market thus leading DELTA to import in order to operate at their expected production line and experience an increase in their cost of production. So we can safely say some of the policies adopted by the Government may lead to an increase in p rices or reduction in production causing shortages in the market. However there are some of the legal factors imposed by the Government to the economy which affect the performance, decisions, strategies and processes of DELTA as a firm. For example the ââ¬ËMURAMBATSVINAââ¬â¢ policy which resulted to an increase in unemployment meaning to say that it also lead to an decrease in the level of spending of people. So DELTA as a firm sell more like luxuries goods so people are likely to reduce their consumption of such like products, thus may result in the reduction of prices of the products in order to lure the customers to buy and maintain their market share. Be that it may, not all the policies, rules and regulations set by the Government and laws will have an effect on the operations of DELTA.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Affirmative Action Essay
English 112 Exploratory Essay The Affirmative Action Debate Affirmative Action Defined Affirmative Action can be defined as ââ¬Å"positive steps taken to increase the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education, and business from which they have been historically excluded (Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)â⬠. However because those steps involve ââ¬Å"preferentialâ⬠selection affirmative action generates intense controversy (Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). My View In considering my view on the topic of affirmative action I considered the following analogy found in one of the articles I researched for this essay. ââ¬Å"I and some other people in my neighborhood run a race together to see who is the fastest runner in the community. Unbeknowinst to anyone (including myself), a very crabby neighbor puts weights in the shoes of everyone but me. We run and I come in first, doing a mile in four minutes. Now, I obviously earned that time because I ran really well- but does that mean that I earned getting first place in the race? Did I now deserve to be called the fastsest runner in the community (Balancedpolitics pg. 5)?â⬠This is what I think of when I consider my position on this subject. I believe that diversity is not a natural occurrence, and that people do need help when it comes to breaking down stereotypes. Throughout the emotional process we are expected to learn how to interact with other races and nationalities. However, stude nts, and schools are often segregated, leaving children to live isolated within their own race all the way up until college. As a result opinions of other races are formed based on stereotypes, and without affirmative action diversity is far less likely to occur. Consumer Profile Segments in the Spokane Metropolitan Area Cameron Hashagen Jacob Scott Brittney Wold Eastern Washington University The city of Spokane is located on the eastern side of Washington State about 20 miles from the Washington-Idaho border. It is one of the only major cities in the inland northwest, the closest being Boise, Idaho. The area surrounding the city would be considered rural farming land. In the 2010 United States Census it was determined that Spokane had a population of 208,916 residents. The population estimate for 2013 is 210,721 (US Census, 2010). As compared to the rest of the state, Spokane has a significantly lower median household income, $42,274 as compared to $59,374 which is the stateââ¬â¢s median income. In addition to having a lower household income, this area also has a high percentage of people who live below the poverty line, 18.7 percent of Spokane residents (US Census, 2010). The majority of Spokane residents identify themselves as white at 89.2 percent, followed by those who identify as two or more races at 3.8 percent (Pitts, Tyga, 2010). 90s Hip Hop and Rap free essay sample
Rap and hip-hop first started to come together in the 1970s, but didnt really materialize and become popular until the 1990s. With a huge surge in popularity and growth in the 1990s, it seemed that rap and hip-hop had started a cultural phenomenon that still has noticeable effects easily seen today in music and also in pop culture. A cultural phenomenon is an idea, trend, or movement that shapes and defines that time period. During the 1990s, rap and hip-hop spread like wild fire across the nation, from the inner cities to the suburbs to anywhere where you can find a radio. Rap and hip-hop brought a different kind of lyrical rhythms and upbeat, energetic music that most people werenââ¬â¢t too familiar with. This cultural phenomenon didnââ¬â¢t only bring changes to music; it also brought along chances in fashion as well as a whole new culture and mindset. Modern day rap is an evolved form of music and storytelling that began thousands of years ago in Africa with the ââ¬Å"griotsâ⬠, who were village story tellers who played a simple handmade instrument while they told stories about family, village events, and nature. As they would play their instrument, they would also talk and the two things would mix together, the words flowing with the beat and rhythm of the instrument playing. Alongside the griot tradition, rap also has roots in the days of slavery, when the African American slaves would sing in the fields. It was the new sounds and catchy rhymes that captured audiences across America, and began to shape a new culture entwined with rap and hip hop culture. Some of the major influences to this new cultural phenomenon were Tupac Shakur, Notorious BIG, and The Fab 5 basketball team. As was made most tragically evident by the 1996 and 1997 slayings of Tupac Shakur and the Notorious BIG, two of gangsta raps brightest lights(20). Also, The baggy shorts, the black socks, the swagger, the way they played the game a young, soon-to-be prodigy soaked it all in around the time he was first picking up a basketball. was said by LeBron James remembering the Fab 5(Berger). Through the work of Tupac Shakur and the Notorious BIG, young consumers think they are promised a thug life by joining a gang; and soon these begin to believe that the gangsta lifestyles as an acceptable lifestyle (20). James also talked about the Fab 5 dressed in black socks, baggy shorts, and the swagger in which they played the game. He said the style quickly flooded through the African American culture, and became a fashion style. Overall, there was an enormous influence from just a handful of people. Tupac Shakur is one of the most prominent figures of the 1990s rap and hip-hop scene. Through his gang affiliations, spellbinding lyrics, and his very mysterious death in 1996; Tupac turned into an Internet Icon and is still very popular and talked about today. His words and actions helped to mold the rap and hip-hop scene of the time. Young black youth were taking Tupacs rap lyrics for truth, and started joining gangs, mimicking their rap heros actions. He depicted injustices afflicted to him or his friends in his songs; showing the world that even after segregation was ended, racism was still prevalent towards young black men and that something needed to be done about it. He inspired black youth to stand up for their rights, and became a leader in a political resistance for blacks rights. Another iconic member of the 1990s rap and hip hop cultural phenomenon was Christopher Wallace, A. K. A: Notorious BIG. Mr. Wallace was lyrically one of a kind and he made sure that he was always dressed in the latest fashion. Through his ingenious, lyrically written rap songs, he motivated many young African American youth with his stories and life experiences; becoming triumphant over the people who were holding him down. His songs inspired many of the youth to try to make positive changes in their lives for the better, but at the same time he also rapped about gangs and sent a negative message to some of the other youth. When they would listen to Notorious BIGs positive songs, they tried very hard to make legitimate living and stay off the street and out of gangs. Also, Notorious BIG was known for having a very colorful wardrobe. He played a very large role in shaping the fashion scene of the 1990s rap and hip-hop phenomenon. He helped to create the fashion that goes hand in hand with rap. Notorious BIG was one of the most influential rappers during this era of music. The third group that had a surprisingly large amount of influence on the rap and hip-hop phenomenon of the 1990s was the Fab 5. The Fab 5 was a college basketball team that played for the Michigan Wolverines; the players being Chris Webber, Juawan Howard, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson. This team was first team in the history of the NCAA to start five African American freshmen, and they created fashion styles and promoted rap and hip hop during the 90s. The baggy shorts, the black socks, the swagger, the way they played the game said Berger describing some of the fashion styles that the Fab 5 created. These simple wardrobe changes made such a big impact that still- to this day- that baggy basketball short and black socks are still high fashion in the basketball and hip hop world. Also, the basketball superstars promoted rap and hip hop. They would talk about their favorite musicians to listen too in their interviews, and would describe the way it made them feel. With the influence they had over people, the black youth would listen to the music they would trying to be more like their role models. Just like Notorious BIG, the Fab 5 had quite the impact on the fashion during the 1990s. Overall, the rap and hip-hop cultural phenomenon of the 1990s was dominated influentially by Tupac Shakur, Notorious BIG, and the Fab 5 college basketball team. Each of them helped to mold what hip-hop is today, from the sounds of the music to what is popular to wear. Not only did they shape hip-hop the genre, they also helped to shape the culture that goes along with it, everything from what to think and how to dress. Tupac inspired the youth to stand up for their civil rights; Notorious BIG influenced striving to live a good life, and to stay off the streets; and finally, the Fab 5 changed basketball and hip-hop fashion forever.à If the rap and hip-hop scene of the 90s hadnt taken place, pop culture today would be extremely different. For example, we wouldnââ¬â¢t have such great talents such as Nicki Minaj or Justin Bieber.
